Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of the formula <FORM:1007769/C2/1> (wherein X is an alkylidene group CnH2n, n being 1, 2 or 3) and their preparation by reacting compounds of the formula <FORM:1007769/C2/2> (wherein X1 is an alkylidene group CnH2n or an alkenylidene group CnH2n- 2 convertible thereto by reduction and Z1 and Z2 are hydroxy groups or alkanoyloxy or aralkoxy groups convertible to hydroxy groups by hydrolysis or hydrogenolysis) or amide forming derivatives thereof with ammonia or a salt thereof and, when necessary, converting X1, Z1 and Z2 to X and OH. Examples are given. 3,4 - Dibenzyloxyphenylacetyl chloride is prepared from the acid and thionyl chloride. 3,4-Diacetoxyphenylacetyl chloride is prepared similarly. 3,4-Diacetoxyphenylacetic acid is prepared from 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid and acetic anhydride. The amides of the invention, which are stated to inhibit the action of certain enzymes which decompose adrenalin, may be made up into pharmaceutical compositions with suitable carriers. Solutions, tablets, powders, pills, syrups, elixirs and capsules are mentioned.
