Abstract

1,007,362. Animal beds, pens, kennels. S. B. EVANS. May 20, 1964 [May 24, 1963], No. 20743/63. Heading A1M. An animal kennel, hutch, bed or pen comprises a system of heating, cooling or air conditioning the operation of which is controlled by the presence of the animal within the kennel &c. As shown a kennel 1 is provided with a movable floor 2 which is displaced by the animal to operate a switch 5 which turn on an electric heater 6. When the animal leaves the kennel, the floor 2 is returned by springs 4 thereby releasing switch 5 and turning off the heater. In a modification only part of the floor is displaceable. In a further embodiment an animal bed comprises flexible material, e.g. canvas, stretched between supports and arranged so that one edge is fixed to the bed frame while the opposite edge is fixed to a bar attached to the frame by springs or other means allowing displacement of the canvas whereby the control switch it actuated. Alternatively the bed comprises an air-cushion provided with a pneumatically operated switch actuated by the increased pressure when the animal steps on to the cushion. Both a heating and a cooling apparatus may be provided and the apparatus may be controlled by a photo-electric cell.
