Abstract
1,007,253. Non-conducting coverings for heat. MINISTER OF AVIATION. Oct. 24, 1962 [Sept. 14, 1961], No. 32976/61. Heading F2X. [Also in Divisions A3, B5 and B7] The heat flow across a flexible or rigid porous insulator having a porous reflective face, particularly for use in garments or on aircraft, is reduced by providing a continuous flow of air or gas through the insulator away from the member to be insulated. As shown, in order to insulate a member 16 from a heat source 17, air from a perforated pipe 12 is blown through the porous reflective aluminium coating 10a of a porous cloth 10, a second cloth element 11, positioned by spacers 14, acting to smooth the air flow. In modifications (a) both faces of element 10 are reflectively coated; (b) the face 11a of element 11 is made reflective, the element 10 then being either omitted altogether or retained, either with or without its reflective coating 10a. The temperature of the air in pipe 12 is the same as or slightly lower than the temperature of the member 16. It is stated that the arrangement shown may also be used when the heat source 17 is replaced by a cold sink, the member 16 being maintained warm. In this case the temperature of the air in pipe 12 is the same as or slightly higher than that of the member 16.
