Abstract

1,007,211. Blasting; driving and transmission devices. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. June 19, 1964, No. 25491/64. Heading B3B and B3D. A machine tool includes a rotatable workpiece-supporting turntable member driven by a drive wheel member, a force of one of said members being maintained in direct frictional contact with the edge of the other of said members, a machining tool traversable along a path across the workpiece-supporting face of said turntable and means for varying the edge-face contact distance between said members as measured radially from the axis of rotation of the face contacted member in co-ordination with the traverse of said tool. A workpiece 6 stuck to a rotary table 5 is machined by an abrasive blast from a nozzle 12 carried by a housing 10 carrying an electric motor 9 which, through gearing 21, 20 drives a lead screw 19 to traverse the housing 10 and nozzle 12. The motor 9 also drives a friction wheel 7 driving the table 5 so that the angular velocity of the table is automatically varied during the traverse to maintain constant the linear speed of the table beneath the nozzle 12. The lead screw may be driven by a separate motor. The shaft of the table 5 may be journalled in a support above the table, leaving the bottom face of the table clear for the wheel 7. Alternatively, the arrangement shown in Fig. 2 may be used. The nozzle 12 and wheel 7 need not be at the same radial distance. The nozzle may be vertically and angularly adjustable. When containing a workpiece the speed of the electric motor rotating the drive wheel 7 is varied during traverse of the nozzle 12 so that over a region where a deeper cut is required, the linear speed of the workpiece past the nozzle 12 is reduced by reducing the speed of the motor.
