Abstract
Glass batch materials are mixed by elements rotating in a rotary pan and are prevented from accumulating on the elements and pan walls by flexible members which strike the elements and walls during their rotation. The batch ingredients are placed in a rotary pan 11 in which are carried arms 34 on motor-driven shafts 33, the arms carrying shovels 37, 38 dipping at different levels into the batch. As the arms rotate they encounter chains 40 suspended from the cover of the pan so that the impact prevents accumulation of the batch materials on the arms. In addition, a rapidly rotating element 17 is also mounted inside the pan and carries chains 49 which swing into close proximity to the wall of the pan to remove any accumulation of material; alternatively, flexible rods or a scraper can be used. Water can be sprayed from nozzles 32 and after the mix has been removed, air can be blown in from jets 51 to assist in removing any residual materials and drying the parts between mixing cycles. <PICT:1006990/C1/1> <PICT:1006990/C1/2>
