Abstract

An explosive composition comprises a normally solid non-inhibiting explosive and 1 to 15% by weight of a fibrous polyoxymethylene polymer having an identity distance of 14 <\>rA as measured along the fibre axis, the fibres having a length less than 50 microns and a length to diameter ratio of at least 10 : 1. The explosive may be R.D.X., ammonium nitrate, ethylene-dinitramine, nitroguanidine, P.E.T.N., dipenta-erythritol hexanitrate, mannitol hexanitrate, H.M.X., metadinitrobenzene, 1,3,5 - trinitrobenzene, T.N.T., picric acid, ammonium picrate, tetryl, hexanitrodiphenylamine, or a mixture of T.N.T. with ammonium nitrate, flake aluminium, tetryl, P.E.T.N., ammonium picrate, or R.D.X. The polyoxymethylene fibres may be obtained by subjecting trioxane to high energy ionizing radiation, polymerizing at 30 DEG C. to the melting point of trioxane, and grinding the product. The mixture with the explosive may be formed into shaped elements by extrusion, pressing, or melt casting, and may be used as a propellant, blasting agent, or metal shape-forming explosive.
