Abstract

1,006,771. Book - trimming machines. CHICAGO MACHINERY LABORATORY Inc. Aug. 14, 1964 [Aug. 23, 1963], No.33310/64. Heading B4B. A book-trimming machine comprising a knife 30, Fig. 5, and co-operating counterblade 31 for trimming the book along a line transverse to its back is provided with a die 40 which engages with the back of the book and co-acts with the knife 30 during the trimming operation in order to prevent dog-earing and break-out of the book cover C. The die has a forward face presenting a profile 42, 43 complemental to and supporting the book back BB and a shear face 40F in the plane of the shear face 31S of the blade 31 so that the stroke of the knife includes the shear faces of the blade and die. As described, in a three-knife machine a die is provided for both the foot and head of the book and formed as an arm pivoted on a pin 45 actuated by an arm 47 on a rockshaft 48. The underside of each counterblade 31 is recessed at 31A to permit pivoting of the die to its depressed position. The dies may be modified to accommodate square backed books, and may be formed as integral parts of the counter-blades. The counter-blade 60, Fig. 11, includes a die 61 and a guide slot 65 embracing a fixed rib, to permit each blade to be moved from a retracted position 60R to a position where die pockets 62, 63 engage the backbones of books B5, B6. The dies may also be formed of a plastic composition bonded to a cutting table.
