Abstract

<PICT:1006455/C1/1> The working or drawing chamber of a glass furnace has a molten material, preferably glass, heated by displaceable heating devices, in contact with its external walls. The end wall 5 and part of the bottom of the melting and homogenizing tank are enclosed by a chamber 12 which is filled with molten glass through an aperture 21 in the wall 5, the aperture being then closed by a plug. The glass is maintained in molten condition by means of electrodes 18 and a gas burner 19. The latter, however, only being used in emergency so as to avoid possible contamination of the glass in the tank by fumes. The penetration of the electrodes into the glass is adjustable.
