Stencilling apparatus suitable for printing on a carpet &c. in the form of a web C comprises a plurality of screens 5 disposed in a row and adapted to be moved vertically from a raised position to a printing position in contact with the web, and vice versa, a pair of parallel rollers 7, 8 arranged to be moved across the upper surface of each screen, the space between the rollers serving as a reservoir for the dyestuff, and a suction device 18 located beneath each screen so as to apply a vacuum to the space between each pair of rollers when the respective screen is in contact with the web C and whilst the rollers 7, 8 are being moved across the screen so that the dyestuff is drawn into the web. The web is moved intermittently through the apparatus and differently coloured dyestuffs are used with each screen. During printing the web is attached to an endless belt 3 of stainless steel, bronze or synthetic resin netting and below the upper run of the belt is located a plurality of networks, Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown), of similar material arranged to support the screens 5 when they contact the web. The frame 5a of each screen is mounted in a main frame 6 which is vertically movable. Glue may be used to define the screen pattern. Belts 14, 15 of leather cloth, celluloid, vinyl chloride or polythene are associated with the rollers 7, 8, respectively, and are wound up on or from the respective rollers according to the direction of the drive of a chain 11, to ensure that the suction applied to each funnel device 18 is effective in the screen area between the rollers. The rollers 7, 8 may alternatively be moved across the screen in the same direction as the movement of the web C.
