Abstract

Polymers are obtained by heating at 60 DEG to 180 DEG C., 1 mol. of (A) a sterically unhindered amine containing at least two tertiary amino groups which are not on the same carbon atom, and 0.5 to 2.5 mols. of (B) an organic halide containing at least two aliphatically-bonded chlorine, bromine or iodine atoms which are not on the same or adjacent carbon atoms or an ester of a strong acid with the same carbon skeleton as the halide, wherein at least one of the reactants (A) and (B) contains a carbon chain of at least 18 carbon atoms, optionally interrupted by hetero atoms, and at least one of the reactants (A) and (B) has a molecular weight of at least 500. The polymers may have the formula <FORM:1006151/C3/1> when prepared from diamines of formula <FORM:1006151/C3/2> and dihalides of formula <FORM:1006151/C3/3> where R1, R2, R3 and R4 are monovalent organic radicals, e.g. aliphatic hydrocarbon radicals of 1 to 10 carbon atoms, R is a divalent aliphatic, araliphatic or cycloaliphatic organic radical containing at least 2 carbon atoms, R1 is a divalent aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, aromatic, araliphatic or heterocyclic radical with at least one carbon atom, at least one of R and R1 containing a chain of at least 18 carbon atoms, and R5 and R6 are hydrogen atoms or aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aromatic radicals; R1 together with R3, or R2 together with R4, or R1 together with R2, or R3 and R3 together with R, may form rings with 5 to 7 ring members. When component (B) is an ester it may be a tosylate, methane sulphonate, ethane sulphonate, benzene sulphonate, naphthalene sulphonate, alkylsulphate, trichloroacetate or perfluoroacylate. The polymers may be cross-linked. Examples are given.
