Abstract

1,005,948. Radiation dosimeters; measuring fluorescence. TOKYO SHIBAURA ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Aug.27, 1963. No.33854/63. Heading G1A. A radiation dosimeter comprises a block of phosphate glass subjected to the dose to be measured and means for subsequently measuring the fluorescene of said block to ultraviolet light. The apparatus for measuring fluorescence comprises a source 1 of ultra violet light, a filter 4 to transmit 365 mÁ radiation and a lens and slit collimating system 2, 3 which irradiates the central portion 14 of the block 11. Orange fluorescent radiation passes through a collimating tube and a filter 5 passing wavelengths greater than 580 mÁ to a photo-multiplier 7 and amplifier 8. The effects of contamination are avoided as neither the block hotter 10 nor the surface of the block is irradiated save for the surfaces through which the ultraviolet radiation passes into and out of the block, and fluorescence on these surfaces cannot reach the photo-multiplier. The dosimeter may be slightly pressurized with clean air to prevent the ingress of contaminating dust when the block is replaced.
