Ring-spinning apparatus comprises a spindle with a cap-screwing part and a head 113, and a thread-guide, 0 the head having a cylindrical surface with a peripheral array of equispaced flutes 120 extending in the axial direction and forming teeth therebetween the flutes extending over at least the greater part of the cylindrical surface and being closed at their lower ends and open at their top ends. The flutes may be of uniform trapezoidal section throughout their length, Fig. 1, (not shown); both the side and rear walls of the flutes may converge towards their lower ends, Fig. 3, while the flutes may be of undercut section in their upper parts and of trapezoidal section in their lower regions, Fig. 4 (not shown). The head may be secured to the spindle by a bolt 17 in a recess 34 which need not be as deep as is shown, and may have a conical section 116 and overlap at 35 a conical part 111 of the spindle. This part may be rotatably mounted on ball bearings on the spindle, Fig. 2, not shown. The head and the part 111 are of small diameter than the cap part of the shaft to facilitate doffing. The guide 0 may be replaced by a guide comprising an apertured plate to which is bolted an arm with a slot vertically alined with that in the plate; the lower plate may have a large aperture penetrated by a stud upstanding from the head and replacing the head of the bolt 17. Slots communicating with the apertures may be provided for threading-up. An annular opening is thus formed between the stud and the sides of the aperture so that the thread is constrained to follow a conical path. A guide roller may be disposed between the usual feed rollers and the plate.
