Abstract

Resins are prepared by reacting, at elevated temperature, formaldehyde or a formaldehyde-yielding material with a condensation product of a halomethylated diphenyl oxide and a hydroxylated aromatic hydrocarbon which has at least two labile aromatic hydrogen atoms. There may also be present a phenol having at least two labile aromatic hydrogen atoms in an amount up to 150% by weight of the condensation product. The halomethylated diphenyl oxide may have the formula <FORM:1005735/C3/1> where m is from 1 to 4, and the hydroxylated aromatic compound may have the formula <FORM:1005735/C3/2> where Z is oxygen, -SO2- or alkylidene, r is 0 or 1, m is 0 to 5, each R is alkyl, cycloalkyl, bromine, chlorine or phenyl, and p is 0 to 2. The condensation products may retain the hydroxyl groups on the aromatic nuclei or may have ether linkages formed between the hydroxyl groups and the halomethyl groups. In examples, condensation products are prepared from phenol and chloromethylated diphenyl oxide, and reacted with aqueous formaldehyde and paraformaldehyde.
