Abstract
1405114 Resinous compositions; foundry aggregate binders HOOKER CHEMICALS & PLASTICS CORP 28 Sept 1972 [20 March 1972] 44884/72 Headings C3R and C3N Resinous compositions comprise (1) a resin of the formula wherein n has an average value of 0À2 to 6; x, y and z are integers from 1 to 25; each R 1 independently represents a hydrogen, fluorine, chlorine or bromine atom, a hydrocarbon group or a hydrocarbon group substituted with a keto or carboxylic acid group; R 2 and R 3 independently represent a hydrogen atom or a hydrocarbon or halogen-substituted hydrocarbon group and R 3 represents a hydrocarbon group, (2) a phenolic compound of the formula wherein X represents an oxygen or sulphur atom, y represents an alkylidene group, alkyldene group substituted by one or more cycloalkyl or haloalkyl group, an aryl bis alkylene group, an arylene group, -S-, -S-S- or -SO 2 -, n is 0 or 1, R 5 and R 6 represent hydrogen or halogen atoms, alkyl, haloalkanyl or alkenyl groups of up to 6 carbon atoms, alkaryl or arylalkyl groups, a is 0 or an integer from 1 to 4, b is at least 1, and the sum of a and b is at most 5, or an ester of such a phenolic compound with an aromatic carboxylic acid and (3) an inert solvent for the resin comprising an aliphatic ketone of 3 to 8 carbon atoms or a monoester-monoether of an alkylene glycol of 2 to 10 carbon atoms. The composition may be used in association with an organic polyisocyanate and a foundry aggregate to provide a curable foundry aggregate composition which can be moulded and cured to yield shaped foundry articles. The resin (1) may be prepared by reacting a phenolaldehyde or phenol-ketone condensate with an alkylene oxide, e.g. ethylene oxide and/or propylene oxide. Suitably the phenolic compound is bisphenol A. The polyisocyanate used is preferably a polyaryl polyisocyanate and the foundry aggregate is usually sand.
