Abstract

1,005,456. Selective punching devices. ELECTRONIC MODULES (DESIGNS) Ltd. Nov. 10, 1964 [Jan. 2, 1964], No. 164/64. Heading B4B. A punching device comprises a driving member 1 and a punching member 2 between which is located a link member 3 having cam surfaces 3a engageable with a cam surface 2a on the member 2, the arrangement being such that when a control member 4 is in an inoperative position, Fig. 2, a camming action is permitted between the surfaces 2a, 3a so that a punching stroke of the member 1 causes relative movement between the member 3 and the member 2 without transmitting a drive to the member 2, but when the member 4 is in an operative position, Fig. 1, the camming action and relative movement between the member 3 and the member 2 is prevented, and a punching stroke of the member 1 is transmitted to the member 2 to cause punching to be effected. The member 3 is in the form of a U-shaped spring accommodated between opposed slots in the member 1 which is tubular. The member 4 forms the armature of an electromagnet 12. The upper end of the member 1 is secured to a driving plate 6. With the member 4 in the operative position, when the member 1 is thrust downwardly under the influence of the plate 6, a punch 7 is forced through a die 8 to perforate a card 9. Upon the return movement of the plate 6, the punch is lifted to its original position by means of a plate 10 connected to the plate 6, the member 2 being held down by a nut 13 co-operating with a return plate 11 connected to the die 8. When the electromagnet 12 is energized, the member 4 is drawn upwardly and when the plate 6 is thrust downwardly, the camming effect of the surfaces 2a, 3a is such as to thrust the free ends of the member 3 inwardly towards each other, Fig. 2, to permit the member 1 to move further into the member 2. The punching devices are included in an electric circuit, Fig. 3, each punching device being controlled by a buffer stage 24 when the stage receives an interrogating pulse from a sequence circuit 25, the buffer stages being controlled in turn by a binary counter 22 driven by a pulse generator 21.
