Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of formula <FORM:1005401/C2/1> where R2 and R5 represent H or an aliphatic hydrocarbon residue having 1-4 carbon atoms, at least one of R2 and R5 being a lower alkyl radical, and X may be a phenoxy, halophenoxy, phenyl, halophenyl or benzhydryloxy radical, or a benzyloxy radical having the structure <FORM:1005401/C2/2> where Z is halo or dihalo, or an alkyl or alkoxy radical having 1-4 carbon atoms, and their pharmaceutically acceptable acid addition salts, and the preparation thereof by hydrolysis or alcoholysis of the corresponding 1-acyl- or 1-carbalkoxy-compound, in the presence of a strong base. Compounds where X represents a substituted benzyloxy or benzhydryloxy radical may be prepared by the reaction of the 1-acyl-or 1 - carbalkoxy - 3 - (hydroxyphenyl) - 3 -pyrrolidinol with the desired benzyl halide or benzhydryl halide in the presence of a strong base. Therapeutic compositions in dosage unit form, which are useful as vasopressor-depressor agents and smooth muscle depressants and which may be administered orally or parenterally, contain compounds of the first formula above and a pharmaceutical carrier therefor. Tablets, capsules, elixirs, solutions and suspensions are mentioned.
