Abstract
1,005,322. Pipe couplings. STILE-CRAFT MANUFACTURERS Inc. March 20, 1964, No. 11817/64. Heading F2G. A coupling comprises a tubular body 11 having a socket 26 for reception of a plug 10, a sleeve 33 mounted on the body for movement between limits, and locking means operatively interconnecting the sleeve and body to retain the sleeve in one position when the plug is completely withdrawn, the plug engaging and actuating the locking means when inserted into the socket to release the sleeve for movement. As shown, the body is provided with a partition 25 on either side of which are ports 31, 32 so that fluid under pressure flows via the chamber 35 in the sleeve 33 to the plug 10 when the body and plug are coupled together with the sleeve in the position shown. Sealing rings 36, 37 provide fluid-tightness between the sleeve and body. The locking means comprises a pin 46 on a leaf spring 50 carried by the sleeve and a ball 55 mounted in the body, and coupling between the body and plug is effected by radially movable balls 30 engageable in an annular groove 16 of the plug. In operation, as the plug is inserted into the socket the land 18 of the plug contacts the ball 55 to depress the pin 46 against the action of the spring 50 to thereby release the sleeve. Rotation of the sleeve causes the pin 44 carried by the sleeve to move along the transverse portion 42 of a C-shaped groove in the body, recesses in the sleeve moving out of alignment with the balls 30 so that the sleeve cams the balls into the groove 16 of the plug. The sleeve is moved forwardly so that the pin 44 travels along the groove 41 and, upon rotation of the sleeve, into the transverse portion 43 thereof to prevent retraction of the sleeve until desired. In a modification, the pin 46 is mounted in a spring plate which urges the pin into the hole 54.
