Abstract

A process for removing phenols, pyridine and prussic acid from ammoniacal liquor from coke ovens and gas works, comprises as one stage, the treating of the liquor with an extraction medium comprising xylenyl diphenyl phosphate, separating from the liquor the xylenyl diphenyl phosphate as a fluid including the phenols &c., distilling the separated fluid to remove the phenols &c., and recycling the xylenyl diphenyl phosphate. Traces of free alkali may be added to the liquor or to the extraction medium, and a demulsifier, e.g. 0.5% tributyl phosphate, may be added to the extraction medium, and the charged extraction medium may be heated to 120 DEG C. prior to distillation to prevent emulsification. An example is described in which four stages are carried out in sequence.ALSO:Phenols, pyridene and prussic acid are removed from industrial waste liquors by treating the liquor with xylenyl diphenyl phosphate, separating from the liquor the xylenyl diphenyl phosphate as a fluid including the phenols &c., distilling the separated fluid to remove the phenols &c., and recycling the xylenyl diphenyl phosphate. Traces of free alkali may be added to the liquor or to the xylenyl diphenyl phosphate, and a demulsifier may be added to the phosphate, e.g. 0.5% tributyl phosphate. The charged xylenyl diphenyl phosphate may be heated to 120 DEG C. prior to distillation to prevent emulsification. An example is described in which four stages are carried out in sequence.
