Abstract

1,005,068. Stoppers. P. B. BUCKLEY. May 1, 1963 [Feb. 1, 1962], No. 3820/62. Heading B8T. A device for closing a bung hole in a beer barrel comprises a wooden bung 13 having a hole 15 therein inserted in the bung hole, and a plug 16 made of plastics of rubber material inserted in the hole 15, the plug having a closed outer end 18 and an open inner end 19, one of the two ends having an externally projecting annular flange 20 and the other end being tapered to facilitate insertion of the plug. Fig. 1 shows the device in use before firing of the barrel. When firing is to take place the plug 16 is formed into the barrel and the hole 15 is afterwards reclosed by a plug 21, having a flange 25 at its outer end. The internal surface of the tubular portion may be reduced in diameter in order to thicken and strengthen the outer ends of the tubular walls. The flange may be formed at other than the ends of the plug which may be attached by a flexible strap to the bung, and if porosity of the plug is desired it may be formed with small holes in its closed end or with grooves in the outer surface of the tubular portion.
