Abstract

1,004,901. Surface saponification of cellulose ester fabrics. COURTAULDS Ltd. May 22, 1963 [May 23. 1962], No. 19797/62. Heading B5B. The fibres of a cellulose triacetate fabric are superficially saponified while leaving the interior of the fibres substantially unchanged by immersing the fabric in an aqueous alkaline saponifying bath having a pH greater than 7 and containing a cation-active compound, the concentration of the alkali in the bath, the bath temperature and the immersion time being so selected that saponification of the fibres is restricted substantially to the exterior of the fibres. The alkali in the solution may be sodium or potassium hydroxide, sodium or potassium carbonate, bicarbonate, phosphate (i.e. Na 3 PO 4 or K 3 PO 4 ), or metasilicate or may be the cationactive compound itself, e.g. a quaternary ammonium hydroxide such as tetra n-butyl ammonium hydroxide. The cation-active compound is, however, preferably a quaternary ammonium halide such as lauryl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride or cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide. Phosphonium halides or hydroxides may be used. The term " cellulose triacetate " is defined as meaning cellulose acetate having an acetyl value of at least 59% calculated as combined acetic acid. When the alkali is caustic soda, the saponification temperature is preferably 55‹ to 65‹ C., when the alkali is sodium carbonate it is preferably 70‹ to 100‹ C., and when it is sodium bicarbonate it is preferably 95‹ to 100‹ C. and the rate of saponification is slower. The treatment may be combined with the dyeing of the fabric provided that the dyestuff to be used is stable to the alkali used for the saponification. The triacetate fabric may be treated in the unset state or may be treated after having been subjected to a heat-setting treatment. The treatment increases the safe ironing temperature of the fabric and reduces the tendency of the fibres to become charged with static electricity. Specifications 758,442 and 815,794 are referred to.
