Abstract

Alkenyl ethers are prepared by heating a 1,2-halohydrin ether which contains the group <FORM:1004809/C2/1> where X represents chlorine, bromine, or iodine, with an alkali metal alkoxide dissolved in or suspended in a sulphone or a sulphoxide, to cause dehydrohalogenation. The above group may be attached to an alkyl group or another similar group so as to form the structure <FORM:1004809/C2/2> The reaction is preferably carried out at such a temperature that the alkenyl ether and alkanol liberated, distil out of the reaction mixture. Numerous examples of reactants and solvents are given.
