Abstract
The invention comprises sulphonamides of the formula <FORM:1004582/C2/1> in which (a) R1 is hydrogen and R2 is a halogen atom or a methyl group or (b) R1 is a halogen atom or a methyl group and R2 is hydrogen or a halogen atom. The invention comprises also salts of the sulphonamides. The compounds may be prepared by reacting 3,4-dichlorobenzene sulphonic acid chloride with an appropriately substituted aniline at atmospheric temperature in an aqueous medium in the presence of an acid-binding agent or in a non-polar organic solvent. The examples describe the preparation of the 3- and 4-chloranilide, the m- and p-toluidide, the 3-methyl-4-bromanilide and the 4-bromanilide of 3,4-dichlorobenzene sulphoric acid. The products are useful as bacteriostats and fungistats (see Division A5).ALSO:Bacteriostats and fungistats for medicinal or veterinary use contain sulphonamides of the formula <FORM:1004582/A5-A6/1> in which (a) R1 is hydrogen and R2 is a halogen atom or a methyl group or (b) R1 is a halogen atom or a methyl group and R2 is hydrogen or a halogen atom (see Division C2). Salts of the sulphonamides may also be used. Specified compounds are the 3- and 4-chloranilide, the m- and p-toluidide, the 3-methyl-4-brom-anilide and the 4-bromanilide of 3, 4-dichlorobenzene sulphonic acid. The products may be formulated as compositions for oral, parenteral or topical use and may be put up as tablets, coated pills, suspensions, solutions, granules, capsules, emulsions, powders and ointments with the aid of known pharmaceutical diluents. Other pharmaceutical products may be included in the compositions.
