Abstract

A process of de-inking paper products without any prior contact with water comprises contacting the products with an organic solvent containing as a solute a surface active agent. Various surface active agents of the anionic, cationic, non-ionic and ampholytic types are listed while in particular oxyalkylated agents are described. Many solvents are also listed. The used paper is sorted, dusted, macerated, shredded, and thus beated as a suspensions of about 1-10% by weight in the solution. After heating the excess liquid is separated and the fibre content washed if desired. A filter of the Oliver type wheels comprises a perforated drum through which the liquid is drawn leaving the mat of fibres on the outer surface, may be used. The fibres may there be bleached. The ink is removed from the solution by filtration, settling and decartation, and/or distillation. A counter current extraction process may be used.
