Abstract

A process of de-inking paper products comprises pulping imprinted paper with a caustic free aqueous solution consisting essentially of minor amounts of an oxyalkylated alcohol, oxyalkyloted phenol or oxyalkylated water and thereupon separating the paper from the aqueous solution. The waste paper after being sorted, dusted, macerated and subdivided into small pieces is introduced into the aqueous solution which contains about 001%-2% of the organic reagent. After heating, the excess liquid is separated, and the fibre content washed, if desired. A filter of the Oliver type which comprises a perforated drum through which the liquid is drawn leaving a mat of fibres on the outer surface may be used. The fibres may then be bleached. The ink may be removed from the aqueous solution by filtration, centrifugation, settling and deviating or by flotation. In the latter case the pulp may also be separated by flotation from the aqueous solution at the same time. The de-inking may be carried out at, or above or below, room temperature. Lists of the alcohols, phenols and alkylene oxides which may be used to form the organic reagents are given together with the preferred relative proportions.
