Abstract
1,004,262. Radiography. UNITED KING- DOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. June 4, 1962 [July 4, 1961], No. 24191/61. Heading H5R. Between the radiation source, or the body undergoing radiographic examination, and the sensitive surface on which a record is being made, is interposed a shield having at least one collimating passage therethrough, which shield can be given a compound pivotal motion so that the said passage scans completely a given field. In the example shown, 24 represents a radiation source, and 23 a film or fluorescent screen, both inside shielding 25. Between them is a lead ball 11, about ten inches in diameter, mounted for universal rotation in a socket in a wall 17. The ball is centrally bored to receive a tightly fitting lead cylinder 12, in which the collimating tubes 13 are provided. They may be made by splitting the cylinder 12 in two, and then forming diametral grooves on the flat surfaces. A motor 18 is connected so as to apply a horizontal stroke to an eye 21 fixed to the ball, and another motor 19 applies a vertical stroke to another eye 22. The ball can thus be swivelled about two mutually perpendicular axis, and the amplitudes can be so predetermined that a given field is fully scanned. By suitably choosing the distances of members 23, 24 from the ball, magnified reproduction may be obtained. Specification 758,540 is referred to.
