Abstract
A paint or coating composition comprises an aqueous solution or dispersion of a water-soluble or dispersable film-forming binder having double bonds and capable of oxidation polymerization, and a siccative which is one or more water-soluble metal compounds capable of reacting with atmospheric oxygen with an increase in the valency of the metal component thereof and/or with the formation of a per-compound of the metal component. The film-forming binder may be tung and/or oiticica oils, an ester of a poly-phenolether resin (containing about two epoxy groups/molecule) and linseed oil fatty acids which is reacted with maleic anhydride, an adduct of linseed oil and maleic anhydride, a linseed oil reacted with maleic anhydride, vinyl toluene and an isophthalate resin (as described in Specification 896,743). The siccative may be a salt of copper, nickel, cobalt or manganese, e.g. the sulphate, acetate, chloride, nitrate, formate, or ammonium chromate, K3Fe(CN)6, Na3(Co(NO2)6), or ammonium borate. The composition may also contain ammonium ions and/or ammonia lead acetate, and the siccative may be an amino complex of a metal salt. An oil-soluble siccative metal salt, e.g. cobalt or manganese naphthenate may also be present in the composition. The concentration of metal ions in the composition may be reduced by a complex forming additive, e.g. ammonium citrate. The composition may also contain a water-soluble zinc hydroxide amino complex.
