Abstract
1,004,050. Hydraulic transmission of power. FORD MOTOR CO. Ltd. July 17, 1964 [Sept. 20, 1963], No. 37006/63. Heading F2C. In a variable-speed hydrostatic drive for a motor vehicle comprising a pump 1 and a motor 3 having parallel axes of rotation, each comprising a cylinder and piston member and a swashplate member, one member of the pump is drivingly connected to an input shaft 7 and the other member is coaxial with and drivingly connected to an output shaft 15, while one member of the motor is non-rotatable and the other is rotatable and is geared to the output shaft 15 by meshed gears 21, 23, 25. As shown the pump cylinder and piston member 5 is connected to the input shaft 7, the swash-plate member 13 being carried by the output shaft 15. The motor swash-plate 17 is pivotally mounted in a casing (not shown) and the piston and cylinder member 16 rotates, the pump and motor being hydraulically connected. On starting, with the motor swash-plate 17 inclined, substantially the whole drive torque is transmitted hydraulically to the motor 3 and through gears 21, 23, 25 to the output shaft. As the inclination of the motor swash-plate is reduced the drive is progressively taken up by the pump swash-plate 13 until when the swash-plate 17 is normal to the axis of rotation of the motor, direct drive through the pump is obtained, the gear train 21, 23, 25 being unloaded.
