Abstract
1,004,046. Contacting gases with liquids. SULZAR BROS. Ltd. July 24, 1963 [July 31, 1962], No. 29356/63. Heading B1R. A gas/liquid contact column contains at least two packing elements wherein the elements are of corrugated lamellae parallel to one another and to the column axis and the corrugations of adjacent lamellae extend in different directions, whilst the elements are arranged so that the planes of the lamellae are angularly displaced relative to one another about the column axis. The elements may be displaced by 90 degrees to one another whilst there may be a clear space between adjacent elements. The corrugations of the lamellae may have the same inclination to the column axis, e.g. 20-70 degrees, and the direction of corrugation of adjacent lamellae intersect one another. Planar lamellae may intersperse the corrugated lamellae which may also have serrated bottom edges. In large columns each packing element may comprise four similar sections each consisting of corrugated lamellae held together by sheet metal framework of the same height as the lamellae. The bottom of an element may also be provided with a downwardly tapering draining collar. The lamellae may be made of metals such as copper, stainless steel or of plastic, in the form of woven textile fabric strengthened by woven-in metal wires, or a woven or knitted fabric of metal wires which may be rendered self-wetting by roughening the surface, applying a porous substance, or a silica colloid or having a mesh in which adjacent wires are not more than 0À1 mm. apart.
