Abstract

<PICT:0806975/III/1> A packing for distillation and like columns consists of a number of units 10, 11 and 12 comprising spaced plates 14 having lugs 16 engaged in notches in spacer bars 15 and assembled in the column with the plates of alternate units at an angle of between 45 and 90 degrees to each other. Four spacer bars 15 are used in each unit and the spacing of the plates is at least 1/4 inch. The plates may be of aluminium and, e.g., 1/16 inch thick. Liquid is distributed over the uppermost packing unit from a box having rows of holes drilled in its base and aligned with the upper edges of the plates in the unit, the holes in the outer rows may be slightly enlarged to give a more uniform distrubution of liquid in the column. The packing is particularly suitable for distillation columns producing heavy water by distillation, having several hundred theoretical plates and employing a high reflux ratio. The heat required in the still may be obtained by compressing the overhead vapours and condensing these in a re-boiler. In an example a column 6 inches square and 50 feet in height is employed.
