Abstract
1,003,844. Gear pumps and motors. W. YOUNG. July 5, 1963 [April 7, 1962], Nos. 3203/62 and 13491/62. Heading F1F. In a gear pump, or motor, a pair of flexible cheek plates E<SP>1</SP>, E<SP>2</SP> (Fig. 2) abut shoulders a (Fig. 1) at the peripheries of bores M<SP>1</SP>, M<SP>2</SP> in which they are lodged and are pressed against side faces g1, g<SP>2</SP> of a pair of meshing gears B<SP>1</SP>, B<SP>2</SP> by pressure communicated to a space e through axial passageways a<SP>2</SP> on the highpressure side of the gears, said shoulders positioning the plates such that they are separated from the gears by a space a<SP>1</SP> when the pump or motor is stationary. To increase their flexibility the plates include arcuate grooves P on the sides adjacent space e and in register with the gear teeth. Fluid leaking through bearings c<SP>1</SP>, c<SP>2</SP> collects in chambers G<SP>1</SP>, G<SP>2</SP> and escapes through a passage H<SP>2</SP>, or H<SP>3</SP>, to the low-pressure side of the gears, end plate A<SP>1</SP> being rotated through 180 degrees when the direction of fluid flow is reversed to bring a passage (Fig. 3, not shown) communicating with a passage H into register with passage H<SP>2</SP> or H<SP>3</SP>, accordingly. A bore J in a shaft C<SP>2</SP> for gear B<SP>2</SP> connects chamber G<SP>2</SP> with a similar chamber (not shown) adjacent a bearing at the opposite end of the shaft. Alternatively, pressure is communicated to space e from the high-pressure side of the gears through a passage a<SP>3</SP> (Fig. 5) and a non-return valve q<SP>1</SP>, or a passage a<SP>6</SP> and a non-return valve q<SP>2</SP>, depending upon the direction of fluid flow between inlet and outlet openings D<SP>3</SP>, D<SP>4</SP> in a casing A for the gears, and passages a<SP>4</SP>, a<SP>5</SP> in an end plate A<SP>2</SP>.
