Abstract

1,003,750. Mounting gear-boxes. FORD MOTOR CO. Ltd. Jan. 7, 1964 [Jan. 11, 1963], No. 1334/63. Heading B7H. A motor vehicle transmission arrangement comprises a gear-box 13 having an output shaft 11 connected by a flexible coupling 15 to a drive shaft 6 which is connected through a constant velocity universal joint 25 to.a differential input shaft 23. The engine is mounted at the front of the vehicle and the rear wheels are independently suspended. The differential gear-case 65 has a forward extension 31 having at its forward end a forging, Fig. 4, comprising a pair of lugs 37 by means of which and pairs of conical rubber bushes 39, the forging is bolted to brackets 47 and to the top 43 of the drive line tunnel 45. Vertical vibrations are cushioned by flanges on the bushes and the connection to the body is made at a point forward of the positioning of maximum deflection of the rear seats. In an alternative connection for the extension 31, the forging 33 has a pair of laterally extending plates 51 secured to vertical plates 53 of sandwich type resilient mountings 55, Fig. 2. The differential gear-case is connected by bolts 67 to a transverse channel 69 which is connected either by a rubber bushed connection 37 to brackets 71 welded to side frame members 75 of the vehicle, or alternatively, Fig. 2, by a plate 83 bolted to the channel 69 and fixed by a resilient sandwich type connection 87 to the side rails 75. The body is strengthened by a member 59 in the vicinity of the connection between the extension 31 of the differential gear-case and the drive line tunnel. The transmission shafts 6 and 23 are inclined to one another and in a modification, Fig. 6, the forward shaft is shortered by the incorporation of a tubular extension 89 of the gear-box 13 enclosing a longer output shaft 11 leading to the flexible coupling 15 which may be of steel or of laminated construction.
