An agricultural baler has a rotary feeder 14 on a shaft 9 which sweeps material over a feed table 21 into the path of a reciprocating ram 3, the working face 15 of the feeder being approximately radial to shaft 9 and feed table 21, and the working face 16 of the ram 3 is substantially tangential to a circle 17 having a diameter approximately equal to the distance between floor 19 and roof 18. The faces 15, 16 intersect, Fig. 1B, when the ram takes material from the feeder. The ram and feeder consist of a series of side-by-side plates. The ram is fixed to a pivoted bell-crank 6 connected by a rod 4 to pivot 7 on a crank 8 on shaft 9 driven from shaft 10. Binding needles 12 pass between the ram plates and through slots in the roof 18 and floor 19 of the baling chamber 1 to co-operate with a knotting device on shaft 13. The table 21 is an arc with a centre at or near the axis of shaft 9. A portion 23 of the feeder strips any material carried by the ram when in the broken line position in Fig. 1. Material may be fed to feeder 14 by vibrating members 20 of a combine harvester. Forwardly facing teeth, Fig. 2 (not shown), on the roof and floor of chamber 1 prevent retrograde motion of the material. The floor 19 has a delivery frame which is adjustable relative to a member to adjust the pressure exerted on the bales, thus the density of bales can be varied.
