Abstract

[Also in Division F2] A tray 4, Fig. 2, in a gas/liquid contact column has apertures such as 3 provided with valves having a valve plate 2 which may be perforated as at 6, a depending and slotted skirt 1 to guide the valve in vertical movement and a travel limiting element 7 with bent-over portions 7c which will abut against the tray to limit upward movement of the valve but which are resilient and shaped to allow the valve to be inserted in an aperture from above the tray. In a modification the skirt is formed of a series of tongues and the ends of some of the tongues are bent over to form travellimiting elements. In further modifications a downwardly extending limb of a travel-limiting element terminates in a trapezoidal-shaped plate which projects through a slot in the guiding member. As shown in Fig. 6, the travellimiting element consists of a bowed resilient metal strip 18 engaged in slots in the guiding member 20 and projecting therefrom at 18b. In Fig. 8, guiding members and travel-limiting elements are formed by resilient strips 24a and 25a secured to a valve plate 21 and formed with depending limbs 24b and 25b and bent-over portions 26 and 27. Similar guiding members and travel-limiting elements may extend from a three-limbed member straddling the upper surface of the valve plate while in another embodiment downwardly extending limbs terminating in outwardly projecting portions are struck out of the material of the valve plate and when in position over an aperture the downwardly extending limbs of the valve pass through slots in the tray extending from the edge of the aperture. In this embodiment the edges of the valve plate may be serrated. In valve shown in Fig. 14 the valve-plate 45 is dished and has a serrated-edge while the guiding members and travel-limiting elements are constituted by three (two of which are shown) members 42b extending from a portion secured to the undersurface of the valve plate. In a further embodiment, Fig. 17, the guiding members 51a and limbs 51b extend from plates secured to the valve plate 48, the limbs 51b preventing the valve plate in its lowest position from completely closing the aperture 49.
