Abstract

[Also in Group XII] The openings in a tray of a gas/liquid contact column for the upward passage of gas are provided with valves, each having a member 25 (Figs. 5A and 8), with its side edges overlying an opening in the tray and with a leg 27 at each end extending through the opening and terminating in a flange 30 so that upward movement of the valves is restricted by contact of the flanges with the underside of the tray. One side edge of a member 25 may be made heavier than the other so that in its initial opening movement it pivots about its heavier edge. The members 25 may be made of flexible material to enable them to be inserted and withdrawn through the openings in the tray and, as shown in Fig. 11, an opening 36 may be formed in the valve member. In a modification (Fig. 12), the valve member is circular and in a further modification one segment of a similar valve member is made heavier than the others so that an initial pivoting movement takes place about the heavier segment.
