Abstract

1,003,255. Road vehicle suspensions. REGIE NATIONALE DES USINES RENAULT. June 1, 1962 [June 15, 1961], No. 21302/62. Heading B7D. An independent front suspension for a front wheel drive motor vehicle comprises a pair of support arms 5, 7 pivoted at 10 and 11 respectively to a plate member 9 secured by bolts 13 and 15 to the vehicle chassis frame member 12, 14, and at 6 and 8 to the vehicle stub axle support 4. The stub axle 2 is driven by a shaft 16 incorporating universal joints 17 and 18 enclosed in rubber guards. A bracket 21 is provided on the lower link 7 to form the lower support for a vibration damper 19 equipped with a stroke-limiting rubber stop 20. An anti-roll bar 25 is mounted in bearings on the vehicle frame and is secured to the bracket 21. The upper pivot 10 comprises a pivot pin having splines 27 preventing its rotation in the supporting plate 9 and rubber bushes 28 vulcanized to sleeves rigid with the arm 5 and pin, respectively. The lower pivot comprises a pin 30 non-rotatably supported in the plate 9 by splines 31, a rubber bush 32 being vulcanized to sleeves rigid with the pin 30 and arm 7, respectively, the outer sleeve 33 being connected to a torsion bar 35 the other end of which is secured to an adjustable support 38. The supporting plate 9 may comprise an elongate section 9<SP>1</SP> to which are welded brackets 22, 9<SP>3</SP> and 9<SP>5</SP> for supporting the upper end of the vibration damper 19 and providing the supports for the upper and lower pivots, respectively, for the support arms 5 and 7, the brackets 9<SP>3</SP> and 9<SP>5</SP> also having apertured flanges by means of which the support may be attached to the frame member 12, 14 by two upper and two lower bolts 13, 15, respectively. In an alternative arrangement, the mounting plate may comprise a single forged steel element.
