Abstract

1,003,057. Convertiplanes. E. B. WILFORD. Feb. 20, 1963, No. 6801/63. Headings B7G and B7W. An aircraft (Fig. 1) has a body containing a turbo-jet engine, fixed wings 16, and rotor blades 14 mounted for rotation about the longitudinal axis of the body and movable between a flight-sustaining position and a body-trailing position. The aircraft as described has a screen in the engine intake, since this is close to the ground in the nose sitting attitude of Fig. 1. The engine jet pipe 36 discharges through a nozzle 33 when the blades are in their trailing position, but is deflected through the hollow blades to tip jet nozzles 51 (Fig. 1) by deflectors 48 fixed to the blade roots when the blades 14 are in the flight sustaining position shown in Fig. 4. Air is drawn in through openings 52 to cool the exhaust gases, and to further protect the rotor blades the ducts formed in them may be lined with ceramic material. Cyclic and collective pitch control is effected by control rods 64, 64a to a swashplate and by links 66, 66a to the leading edges of the blades. When the blades are in the trailing position they may be operated as control surfaces in addition to elevons on the wings 16. The coning angle of the blades may be varied in this position (by variable stops) to vary their control effectiveness. The undercarriage 30, 32 is retractable into the nose and tip tanks.
