Abstract

[Also in Division G1] A device for temperature measurement, Fig- 2, comprises a thermally responsive member formed from a steel element 1 and an element 3 of transparent synthetic resin cemented together one end of the member being moved with changes in temperature past light sources 9a to 9g whose intensities successively increase and are integral multiples of that of the source 9a, the light being conducted through the element 3 to a photo-diode or photo-resistor 4, the output of which gives an analogue indication of the temperature and is fed to an amplifier 6. In an alternative arrangement, Fig. 3, the thermally responsive member is of spiral form and the outer end moves over a digital-binary optical code raster 8b. The element 3 comprises four individual light channels each leading to a separate photo-diode 4 at the centre of the spiral. The raster 8b is uniformly illuminated by a light source 9 and as the end 7 moves over the raster due to temperature changes the outputs of the photo-diodes 4 give an indication of the temperature. In a further embodiment the raster 8b is replaced by a shield with a slit whose width varies in constant incremental steps, a single photo-diode being used.
