Abstract
Ammonium nitrate is made by introducing into an absorption column 1 a saturated or nearly saturated solution of ammonium nitrate into the upper part at 2, air or oxygen into the lower part at 3, and nitrogen peroxide at an intermediate level at 4; the solution descends taking with it nitric acid formed from the oxidation of the nitrogen peroxide, and being free from nitrous acid, is drawn off at the bottom and neutralized with ammonia from 7 to form a supersaturated solution of ammonium nitrate from which ammonium nitrate is crystallized in 6 and separated in 8, the mother-liquor being recycled to the top of the column at 2. The reaction may be carried out continuously, and separated ammonium nitrate may be dried at 9. The column may be either packed with spacing elements or fitted with trays and bubble-caps, and the nitrogen peroxide may be diluted with inert gas, e.g. nitrogen. The lower part of the column should be between 1/4 and 1/3 of the height of the column. <PICT:1002939/C1/1>
