[Also in Division C5] The invention comprises compounds of the formula where R 1 and R 2 represent alkyl groups, R 3 represents a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group, R 1 , R 2 and R 3 together containing at least 7 and at most 19 carbon atoms, R 4 represents a bivalent group comprising a straight or branched chain of carbon atoms which may be interrupted by one or more oxygen atoms, the sulphur and oxygen atoms vicinal to the group represented by R 4 being attached to carbon atoms of said group Me represents a cation and m represents a number equal to the number of charges on the cation Me and the preparation thereof by sulphating the product obtained by reacting an olefin with a compound of the formula HS-R 4 -OH, with the proviso that if an α- olefin is used then a catalyst ensuring Markownikoff addition is also present or the product obtained by reacting a secondary or tertiary mercaptan with a diol of the formula HO-R 4 - OH. Preferred radicals represented by the group -R 4 - are the radicals -[CH 2 CH 2 O] n -, where n is an integer of 1 to 12. Compounds of the formula I wherein both R 2 and R 3 represent hydrogen atoms and R, R 4 , Me and n are as hereinbefore defined are preparee by the method described above in the first method, the conditions being such as to give anti-Markownikoff addition of the mercaptan to the diol. Secondary mercaptans are obtained by reaction of hydrogen sulphide with olefines using a silica-alumina catalyst. Primary mercaptans are obtained by reaction of 1,2-olefins with hydrogen sulphide in the presence of di-tertiary butyl peroxide.
