Abstract
A liquid resin composition comprises an alkaline mixture of a condensate from 1 mol. of melamine and 1.5-4.5 mols. of formaldehyde, and a nitro compound of the formula R1R2R3.C.NO2 wherein R1 is hydrogen or a methylol group, R2 is hydrogen or an alkyl group of 1-12 carbon atoms, and R3 is hydrogen or an alkyl group of 1-12 carbon atoms or a methylol group. The amount of nitro-compound added is from 0.5-13% of the weight of the melamine resin, if alone, or from 0.5-25%, if from 0.4-3.5%, of the weight of the melamine resin, is added of an alkyl or aryl quaternary ammonium hydroxide compound containing from one to four hydroxyalkyl groups. The melamine resin may contain minor amounts of urea, thiourea, aniline or a sulphonamide, and may be dissolved or dispersed in water or an alcohol, or a mixture thereof, or in a ketone. Suitable nitro-compounds are nitroethane, 2-nitropropane, 2-nitro-2 - ethyl - 1,3 - propanediol, and 2 - nitro - 1 - butanol. Suitable quaternary ammonium compounds are 2- propanol triethanol ammonium hydroxide, diphenyl diethanol ammonium hydroxide, trimethyl ethanol ammonium hydroxide, and tetra-2-propanol ammonium hydroxide.
