Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of formula <FORM:1002667/C2/1> in which Ph1 represents a phenyl or halogenophenyl group, Ph2 represents a 1 : 4-phenylene or halogeno-1 : 4-phenylene group, and R represents a hydrogen atom or alkyl group, and salts of these acids, which are prepared by reaction of compounds of formula <FORM:1002667/C2/2> or a metal salt thereof, with <FORM:1002667/C2/3> where R1 is preferably a group -COOR, or a functionally converted carboxy group capable of being converted into a group -COOR, and X is a reactive esterified hydroxyl group. The hydroxyl group may be esterified with a strong organic sulphonic acid, or preferably with a strong mineral acid. Suitable functionally converted groups R1 are cyano or amido groups which are converted to the groups -COOR by known methods. Preferred salts of the acid of the first formula above are the ammonium salts, metal salts, and salts with organic amines, e.g. pyridine, piperidine, N,N-diethylamine and N,N,N-triethylamine. The compounds of the second formula given above may be prepared by reacting a compound of formula <FORM:1002667/C2/4> with H-Ph2-OH in the presence of a suitable Lewis acid reagent. 2-([Halogeno]-phenyl)-2-(4 - hydroxy - [halogeno] - phenyl) - propane may be prepared by reacting methyl magnesium iodide with acetophenone which may be halogen substituted, and reacting this 2-([halogeno] - phenyl) - 2 - propanol with phenol, possibly halogen substituted, in the presence of aluminium chloride. Therapeutic compositions useful for the treatment of liver poisoning and hypercholesterolenic symptoms, and which may be administered enterally or parenterally contain as active ingredient compounds of the first formula above.
