Abstract

A method of producing expanded thermoplastic material comprises heating thermoplastic material to a temperature at which it is plastic but not liquid, adding an expanding agent thereto before, during or after said heating operation, mixing the said materials in a mixing device without the application of external heat and passing the mixed materials out of the device, in which mixing occurred, at such a temperature that rapid solidification accompanies the expansion of the expanding medium, to produce a stable expanded structure. The degree of expansion can be adjusted by altering the pressure on the thermoplastic material as it is released from the mixing device. Apparatus for producing the expanded material comprises a warming device for the thermoplastic material, a mixing chamber with a mixing rotor, means for moving the material from the warming device into the mixing chamber and means for supplying an expanding medium to the said chamber. The thermoplastic material may be polyethylene, polypropylene or a polyamide and the expanding agent may be helium, nitrogen, hydrogen, air or a gas-liberating material such as ammonium carbonate.
