Abstract

Polymer compositions which form double layer lacquers comprise a two-phase system, one phase of which is a liquid containing a dissolved film forming lacquer binding agent and the other phase of which is a dispersed solid phase comprising granules of a thermoplast, which granules project from the dried binder surface and flow to form a surface layer on melting. In examples, polyethylene and polyamide are used as the dispersed solid phase and the binding agent is polyvinyl butyral or silicone lacquer.ALSO:A process for the production of a double layer lacquer coating by one-step application comprises the application of a two phase system, one phase being liquid and containing a dissolved film forming lacquer-binding agent and the other phase being dispersed granules of a thermoplast, the size of the granules being such that they project from the surface of the film formed on drying the binder, the double layer coating being formed by a two stage heat treatment comprising first solidifying the binding agent at a temperature below the melting point of the thermoplast and then heating at above said melting point to cause the projecting parts of the granules to liquefy, flow and form a surface layer anchored to the basic layer. The binding agent may have a priming action and may be used with corrosion protective pigments and/or dyestuffs. In examples, the lacquer-binding agents used are polyvinyl butyral and silicone lacquer, and the thermoplasts are polyethylene and polyamide. The lacquers may be applied to metal surfaces.
