Abstract
The polymerization of tetramethylene oxide at temperatures less than 100 DEG F. is catalysed by 0.005 to 0.1 mol. per cent based on the weight of the monomer of boron trifluoride and, as a promoter, 0.005 to 0.5 mol. per cent based on the weight of the monomer of a promoter which is trimethylene oxide or a compound of the general formula <FORM:1001345/C3/1> where R1, R2, R3 and R4 are hydrogen or alkyl having less than 20 carbon atoms, the values of each R being the same or different. Specified promoters are ethylene oxide, propylene oxide, epoxy butane, and 1 : 2 epoxides of C5 to C18 paraffins. The polymer product has a dilute solution viscosity, e.g. in chloroform, of at least 1 and preferably 2, and may be cured using ditertiary peroxides, e.g. dicumyl peroxide and sulphur. The polymers may be used as reinforcing fillers for elastomeric copolymers of ethylene and propylene.
