An arrangement for indicating and/or controlling angular speeds with reference to a predetermined value comprises a tachometer alternator A coupled to the rotating member, two circuits one including a resistor Z1 and the other a capacitor Z2 which connect the alternator output to an amplitude comparator D which supplies an output to indicating means (not shown) or operates a relay 5 when the speed passes through a critical value. The comparator includes a pair of saturable magnetic circuits 1, 2 to which the input currents, after rectification, are coupled in opposition via coils 12, 23 which carry the resister circuit current and coils 13, 22 which carry the capacitor current. A.C. source S is also coupled to the magnetic circuits via coils 11, 21, rectifiers 9, 10, relay 5 and an indicating device if required. When the alternator frequency is below a critical value wp, Fig. 5, the current via the resistor Z1 is greater than that via the capacitor Z2 and the difference current which acts in the same direction as current from source S saturates the magnetic circuits hence the current in the indicating circuit has a high value P<SP>1</SP> which operates the relay. When the alternator frequency has a value above critical, the difference current is opposed by the current from source S, the circuits are not saturated and the indicating current has a low value P 2 which is not sufficient to operate the relay. Between these values the current curve has a steep slope providing if required a sensitive indication of speed. The relay may be used to control the speed of the rotating member.
