A method of measuring the period of a nuclear reactor comprises integrating the value of a current produced by an ionization chamber adjacent the core during two equal and successive intervals of time, and relating the two results. This method gives a more accurate period value than the more normal method of calculating it from the time required to double the ionization current, since by summing the currents, the effects of random irregularities in the rate of increase of flux are reduced. An ionization chamber 3 passes current to an amplifier 2, whose output is switched for equal succassive time periods by a time-base generator 1 to integrators 4 and 5. A digital voltmeter 6 gives a reading proportional to the reactor period. In an alternative apparatus (Fig. 3, shown) the ionization current passes directly to a current-pulse frequency converter, the pulses being counted during equal successive periods by integrators.
