Abstract

975,742. Nuclear reactors. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. June 21,1962 [June 22, 1961], No. 23974/62. Heading G6C. [Also in Division H3] A device for indicating when the excess reactivity of a sub-critical reactor rises above a predetermined threshold value, comprises a radioactive neutron source disposed within the reactor; a detector for measuring the neutron flux after the neutrons have traversed the reactor core, producing a potential proportional to the flux, which is a function of the excess reactivity of the core and proportional to the intensity of the source; a time-scaled potentiometric device for producing a reference potential which is initially adjusted to the original value of the potential produced by the detector, the reactor thus having an excess reactivity which is predetermined, the reference potential being arranged to decrease as a function of a predetermined time period of the device according to the same exponential law as the neutron source intensity; and an electronic device which compares the potential produced by the detector with the reference potential, producing a signal when the first potential, is greater than the second. In one embodiment (Fig. 1), a potential source 1 has a portion of its potential applied, by means of a potentiometer 2, across an assembly of twelve series resistances M 1 , M 2 , M 3 ... M 12 , the terminals of which are connected to the twelve studs of a commutator 3 having twelve positions, each corresponding to one month of the year. The resistances are chosen so that the potential output of the commutator varies according to the desired exponential law, this output being applied across an assembly of thirty-one series resistances J 1 , J 2 , J 3 ... J 31 associated in a similar manner to the first assembly with a commutator 5 having thirtyone positions, each corresponding to one day of a month. The sum of the resistances J is much greater than that of the resistances M so that the output of the commutator 3 is independent of the setting of the commutator 5. The output of the commutator 5, variable exponentially, is applied across a resistance 7 to a comparator 8 which also receives the output from a neutron flux measuring device 9. The comparator 8 delivers a signal when the latter output exceeds the former, which signal can operate an alarm or control a locating-screw system for inserting an assembly of control rods.
