Abstract
1,000,841. Forming thermoplastic sheet material; making flat films. SVENSKA CELLULOSA A.B. May 13, 1963 [May 14, 1962], No. 18930/63. Headings B5A and B5B. A continuous, substantially stress free, strip or film of material, containing a thermoplastic resin, is formed by extruding a heated tube 4 of the material around a cooled, double-walled mandrel 3, cutting the tube by a knife 5, then drawing the cut tube off the mandrel, and subsequently flattening and storing it on a suitable wind-up device. Contact between the tube and tho mandrel in zone I is prevented by compressed air introduced between the tube and the mandrel through inlet 3d. As the tube progresses along the mandrel to zones II and III it cools to an elastic state and shrinks into contact with the mandrel. The frictional forces caused by this contact are sufficient to prevent any stresses caused by the wind-up device from reaching the still plastic material in zone I, thus allowing the plastic material in said zone to cool to a substantially stress-free state. In an alternative embodiment the zone III comprises an expansible, non- cooled member, zone II having a smaller diameter than either zones I or II. Patterned products may be obtained by introducing different coloured granules into the working material which preferably comprises polyvinyl chloride together with a filler, e.g. chalk or kaolin.
