Abstract

1,000,556. Rear-view driving mirrors; antidazzle devices. WILMOT-BREEDEN Ltd. Nov. 27, 1961, [Dec. 1, 1960], No. 41267/60. Heading B7J. A vehicle rear-view driving mirror comprises a mirror portion 1, Fig. 1, and a mounting stem 3 of moulded one-piece construction, the mirror portion and stem being moulded from a synthetic plastic material and the stem being sufficiently flexible to allow it to be bent to adjust the mirror position and has a malleable metal insert 8 so as to be sufficiently rigid to retain the mirror in the adjusted position. The stem has a cavity 6 to receive the malleable metal strip 8 and has an integral mounting flange 4 provided with fixing holes 7. The plastic is either tinted or transparent, the former serving for anti-dazzle purposes. The rear surface 2 of the mirror has a reflective aluminium layer applied by vacuum deposition on a transparent lacquer first applied to the surface 2, the layer being protected by a coating of opaque paint. In another embodiment the stem is connected to the rear face of the mirror portion and is cylindrical and contains a cylindrical malleable metal rod. A further embodiment differs from the latter embodiment in that the stem tapers towards the major portion and is connected to the edge of the mirror portion.
