Abstract

1,000,349. Bearings. GEORGE RICHARDS & CO. Ltd. Jan. 25, 1963 [Feb. 22, 1962], No. 6096/62. Heading F2A. In an hydrostatic bearing for the slideways of machine tools, e.g. on the table to saddle bearing surface of a table-type horizontal boring machine, the conflicting requirements of the necessity for a large number of oil pockets with the exposure of a considerable part of the bearing surfaces at one extremity of the traverse are overcome by providing parallel faced lubricant trapping bearing members sandwiched between the relatively slidable bearing faces to be lubricated and with limited movement in the direction of travel thereof. A lubricant trapping bearing member 1 has one or more longitudinal pockets 2 forming an opening or openings either throughout the thickness (not shown) or recessed in each face and connected by holes 5 to form a webbed structure 6. In use, one member may be provided at A and B laterally restrained by recessing in either or both engaging surfaces and longitudinally restrained by means of light springs and stops (not shown) so that they always occupy the extremities of the length of engagement of the sliding surfaces. The plate 1 is made of low elastic modulus material, e.g. phenolic resin laminate, nylon or other plastics to ensure dry lubrication in the event of lubricant flow failure and centralization between the engaging surfaces is obtained through compression of the thickness to form a wedge shaped oil flow channel producing a convergent oil flow.
